Outdoor Discovery

In Science, we are studying Daily and Seasonal Changes. We are exploring how plants and animals change throughout the seasons. Our class adopted a tree at the back of our school yard to observe throughout the school year. We went outside to record our observations:

"The leaves are turning yellow!"
"Look, there is a squirrel.  He is gathering nuts."
"This leaf is green and yellow."
"There are a lot of leaves on the ground."
"Look - there are some geese flying south!"

Creating Patterns

Our Grade One students have been learning to create different patterns and name them using letters, numbers, colours, shapes, objects and words (i.e. AB, 1 2, red blue, circle square, block car, can we).  Last week we also made a human pattern - lots of fun!

Number Talk Using 10-Frames

In math class, we have been talking about 'Friendly Numbers for 10' which are the various combinations of numbers that all equal 10 (i.e. 0 &10, 1& 9, 2 &8, etc. ). The focus of this 'Number Talk' was to practice their recognition of 'Friendly Numbers for 10', practice emerging addition and subtraction skills and to build their overall understanding of 10 as a base number concept. I flashed the students the 10-frames one at a time. After each 10-frame was shown I asked them "How many more do we need to get to 10?"  I recorded their responses and then revealed the 10-frame for good. I repeated this process two more times.  It was very interesting to listen to their math thinking and hear them share and discuss their observations!

Primary and Secondary Colours

Using a marker, the students traced 6 circles on their paper. Then we read the book 'Mouse Paint' together as a class.  The students were asked to paint three of their birds in the primary colours (red, blue, yellow).  Then they were asked to paint their three remaining birds in the secondary colours (orange, purple, green) by mixing primary colours. Some students mixed with their brushes and some using their fingers! Once their birds were dry, they used markers to add in the legs, beaks and eyes.

Thanksgiving Turkeys

We have been talking about what it means to be thankful and appreciate the many gifts that each of us have.  Together we brainstormed a huge list of things in our lives that we are thankful for and the children used it to create their 'We Are Thankful' turkeys.
